Successful irrigation demands a lot from the irrigator. Not only must the right crop be selected, but the irrigator must fully understand all aspects of water management, soil and its nutrients, and maintain an efficient system. To learn more, see the links below.
Proper irrigation scheduling takes into consideration the water, soil, and fertilizer requirements. Scheduling ensures water is consistently available to the plant and applied accordingly. For more information, visit our Irrigation Scheduling & Systems section.
Fertilizer and nutrient requirements are critical because irrigation can leach some needed nutrients and add other nutrients creating an imbalance to a field. Resources are available on the Soils & Fertility section.
Irrigating crops requires consideration of several water management issues. See our Water section for tips on irrigation management, drainage issues, and infrastructure.

While not directly involved with engineering aspects of irrigation infrastructure, Ministry of Agriculture staff are available to assist with development and maintenance of your irrigation infrastructure. Staff are available to provide engineering and agronomic technical assistance for irrigation development, essential services through operations and maintenance of provincially-owned irrigation infrastructure and regulatory oversight and environmental sustainability (soil surveys, drainage surveys, environmental testing) through irrigation certification.
